I honestly love every single postcard that goes out. I love this one of greenland, the ice meeting in the middle.

Over a week ago, Linda Cheryl and I pooled our funds to buy $100 worth of Stamp Oasis rubber stamps in auction. These stamps were now 11 years out of print and the only ones which stamp perfectly for Cheryl and I every time.
Even slow and with neuropathy which couldn’t apply force on the left side, they still came out looking good. At least that is what a proud mother would say. Some think that I do the rubber stamping, wooden stamping, stickering and postcards because it is one of many choices: that I could have knit, that I could have done scrapbooking, that I could have done a host of things and just decided on this.
The truth is I can’t knit, I don’t have the hand strength or dexterity for that. In Cancer World, a non-fiction memoir of life on an oncology ward: one woman, after finding out that the side effect of Chemo was tremors and she would not be able to knit, quit taking Chemo. She died. Last night, holding the volleyball to serve, the tremors were moving the ball a half an inch or more every few micro seconds. But a volleyball is a big ball. And I served into the net sometimes.
When I take my hand to stamp down, the stamp doesn’t always end UP on the postcard where I hoped it would.
But it is close. Close enough. And when I lose all use or strength in my left hand, then I use my right hand, or elbow or I ask Linda to push on the placed rubber stamp.I picked postcards because a) quite a few people seemed to want one from Japan, more than I expected. And b) sending something people wanted, doing something people wanted while I was being tested, having the nightly medical and pain nightmares and my entire life had seemed to be put not just on hold but into that static you see on a TV receiving no station. I was dissolved, I was undiagnosed, and that I couldn’t do anything about. Postcards I could.
First I wanted the best postcards. Then I wanted something Japanese, like Hello Kitty on them, then some of the rubber stamps. Experience soon taught me that if I couldn’t do ‘WHUMP’ into the ink and ‘WHUMP’ somewhere on the postcard then that brand wouldn’t work.
If I couldn’t do that 100 times and still have it perfect then it wouldn’t work. That is why I ended up with the 4-5 brands that I did.
I send goth postcards, steampunk postcards, Twilight postcards, anime postcard, exotic lands postcards and postcards of art of all types. I send yaoi and Japanese woodblock prints, Frank Lloyd Wright and Turner, I send anime art of Aoi, of Narao, of all the famous artist,
I send Cambridge and Bettie Paige, Astronomy and Blade of the Immortal. I send animals to children, I send planes to pilots, I send anything legal. And what, in the end, does all the effort matter? I don’t know. I know that every week when the post office returns postcards, that I stole money, postage, ink, postcards, time and energy out of those I love the most.
I made a bad choice, because they didn’t want it, or didn’t care, or weren’t there.I do the postcards because it is one of the few things I can control in this world, and that I thought it was something. I drew my lot, made my best guess and decided to spend half of my energy and time into postcards. I do know that 4-5% of those sent are received (usually through a ‘got postcard’ line or email) and that 1%-.05% of those to whom they are sent are returned. Some weeks more postcards are ‘return to sender’ than any personal mail I might get. I aimed, I tried, I failed.
Please send all personal post to Linda or Cheryl. I will still choose and write every single postcard, and I will stamp a good portion of them. I just don’t believe anymore that I haven’t failed well, everyone one who believed in me, including myself.
See, in the melodrama, I wanted to be the Mysterious Countess,
or ‘Poor but Honest’ or maybe a side role not even shown. I didn’t want to be Gwendoline (though nice set of boobies!), helpless, waiting to be saved. Certainly not, because who does save these days? No one has vocations anymore. People work at helping others to make the money to take care of their own. Work at health authorities for the condo, or the children, or the retirement. No one will entering stage right to save me, and I never pretended I could save anyone, just maybe make it more of a community and less of an isolated world.
But what is 4,600 against 6 billion. Two years of work is nothing compared to the spam bots, or the internet scam artists. And laid end to end, I don’t even think they are a half mile. What difference??I honestly don’t have any idea what use the postcards are, but I send them anyway.
Maybe one doesn’t need belief to act. If you want one, you only have to ask.

I really enjoyed using some of the new stamps last weekend. Stamp Oasis has amazing quality. It is always fun to see how a stamp will turn out. Just looking at the rubber stamp it is sometimes undistinguishable what the image is, but then it really pops out once the stamp is inked.
It's sad when postcards are returned. Maybe it's time to send out group emails to people asking them to confirm their address and interest in still receiving them.
I think there are many people who enjoy receiving your postcards. I hope some of those people who are silent make themselves known to you.
What difference?
Your postcards make me smile every time I get one.
You've inspired me - you get postcards every week from me. So do about 12 other people, family and friends, and they get smiles every week, too. They're not from you, but they would not exist without you.
You make a difference, my dear.
I believe the Postcard Project has made a difference. Therehave been emails, postcards back and letters from postcard recipients saying that receiving a postcard made a difference. They feel like someone cares, like they are not alone.
I think it doesn't matter what percentage we hear back from. If receiving a postcard has helped one person then it is enough and it is important.
When I receive a postcard it always makes me happy. I know you have selected the card, stamps and stickers to personalize the card for me. While you do the card I am in your thoughts. I am your focus. Knowing that and seeing the physical manifestation of your caring in the completed postcard makes me feel important and special and loved. Thank you.
Hey Beth!
We look at your postcards every day. They are all over the house. On the fridge, on the whiteboard, on my desk, mixed in with Sara's books, on Sam's desk, next to the couch, in knitting books as bookmarks, under the small table in front of the couch mixed in with catalogues and newspapers (Sara's "entertainment" usually, she likes to flip through magazines and oh and ah over the pictures.) Today Sara walked around clutching one postcard for about half an hour and telling me all about it. There's a duck on the front, a butterfly stamp on the back, a horse (with hello kitty riding it) and some stickers of animals.
I have multiple postcards on my fridge, some showing the front some the back. Sam and Sara re-arrange them a LOT.
I won't go as far as to say they got me through the winter or anything, but they sure made me smile a lot. Every time I see one of the postcards I think of you (and feel guilty for not writing to you more) and Linda and Cheryl.
So, for what it's worth, your postcards do make a difference in my house!
I read this again last night and thought, "I was in terrible, terrible pain when I wrote this, I should probably edit some of it" but I couldn't find what to edit. I am an athiest of my own belief and yet I continue in them. Does that make me a hypocrite? I want to make a difference and yet can show no evidence that such occurs except in the rare instance.
I will soon be gone and any good that I can do will be gone, should I write letters with the time I have left? What to do? I don't know. I am glad I was able to see such a variety of postcards, so many sent in from around the world from different people - I hope they did make a difference, because they did to me. I hope my life was not just some 'busywork' - and I dragged everyone around me into it.
4,600 against 6 billion? Not a lot.
4,600 against none? A huge amount.
I smile every time I see an EFM/Linda/Cheryl production. The care you put into choosing the cards; the care in the stamping; the oreousness of cards and stamps. I smile again every time I look up at the wall where I keep them on show (also card from other people, of course).
Adds up to a lot of smiles. And those count for much to me.
As for action not needing belief, yes.
One of my favourite moments in the Narnia books is when Puddleglum the marsh-wiggle and his child companions are stuck underground, in a kind of hell, trying to reach the light and clean air of the world above. The wicked witch of the story tells them that there is no world above, no light and clean air, nothing but the dullness and misery of underground. And Puddleglum says (paraphrasing madly) that he'd rather strive for something beautiful which doesn't exist, than give in to ugliness just because it does.
You get postcards returned? How strange! Maybe they moved? But still, wouldn't a change of address still be in effect for up to a year?
I would say "fie" on them, except for the time that you spend.
I know that I've loved every card that I've received.
Dear Beth,
Your postcards have made a difference to me. Some have actually changed my life! Read the e-mail I sent a little while ago (& it was sent before I even read this blog post).
I'm glad that you don't feel that the postcards are meaningless all the time, but sorry that you were in so much pain.
Sometimes my life is nothing more than busywork. I even call it that - the coloring, cutting out of images. The stamping so I'll have more things to color & cut out. But then I put them through my little sticker machine and my busywork turns to gold. It is magic - they become stickers for the Postcard Project. Stickers for Beth, Linda & Cheryl to choose, to handle & to send out on a postcard. Sometimes I am inspired myself & use some of my stuff to create art, cards, bookmarks, gifts. But even when I'm uninspired, or too sick to create my own projects, I have my busywork and I am glad. Thank you!
Sharon
You do have almost a half mile of postcards:
4600 postcards * 6.5 inches length each (some are smaller, some are larger) / 12 inches per foot = 2491 feet. 5280 feet in a mile.
That is a record accomplishment. Imagine laying them end to end--a half mile worth of images lined up end to end in a museum exhibit. Someone could not read them all, see them all, in one day or even several! Or imagine a half mile set up in one museum exhibit...I don't know anyone else who's written that much correspondence in about two years. That's a lot of joy to share.
It was so nice to get my first international postcard, then such a surprise and delight as more arrived. I think reconfirming emails/addresses is a good idea as much as it is practical--but a 99 to 99.5% of received cards is very impressive!
Of COURSE you make a difference !!!!!
Please never doubt that
I know I say this every time but it's still true
David's cards are his prized possession
and for that I love the three of you

Dear, wonderful Beth: You DO make a difference. Yes, it may be a very small difference, but it's a positive small difference. :)
Spammers make a slighter larger difference, only because bad news seems more interesting. You are making a positive contribution to the world. That contribution, no mater how small, is important.
We have both treasured every card you've sent us, dear; the card you sent to my Beloved made her entire week.
The stamps you show us here and on your other blog are amazing. As are you.
Love and zen hugs,
Neil
I came by your blog to see how you're doing. My daughter Johnette and I have loved your postcards. They are read and reread by all in our home. Of course you make a difference, but unfortunately, the people you send them out to are too sick to respond. It amazes me how much energy it takes to write a note and mail it out. Healthy people take it for granted. Unhealthy people know what it takes and are amazed that you are able to do it. Thank you.
Hey sweety,
apparently my postcard got sent to my daughter's address so I know it's safe and I'll get it quite soon.
I know you're really unwell at the moment [ read Linda's comment on the other blog ] so please rest easy and I'll be sending healing vibes your way
The Postcard Project makes a huge difference! Seriously. I know those of us who are asserting this are small in number compared to the mass of postcards you send out and, I guess, hear back nothing about, but the difference your postcards make in my life is huge.
When you say to me in an email "I was just thinking of you and finding the right card for you" I get an incredible feeling to know that someone so amazing and brilliant and talented has been thinking of me when I'm not even around! And when I get the card, I know that you made it for me, thinking of me, using your postcard mastery to match me up with the perfect card.
Your generosity, both physical and in spirit, are astounding to me. My postcards from you are prominently displayed and among my most treasured possessions.
And, for the first time, my postcard was featured in a blog post! I was very excited to see the steampunk card I just received from you here in your post! It made me feel like a movie-star for some reason.
Elizabeth,
I haven't ever gotten a postcard from you but just reading about what you are doing has brightened my world. Life isn't about the big moments, it's about the small ones. The moments you could spend numbing yourself in front of the television but instead you are choosing to make your moments about something. About caring, and love, and thinking of others. That cannot be measured in miles. You've sent your love around the world. How many people can say they've done that? Keep going. Keep giving. And, when you can't rest knowing that what you have done mattered. You've touched my heart.
